stephanie is: upset upset…

well bah! i was putting on my strawberry charm necklace and the charm fell down my sink drain. i figured out how to take out the stopper cause i remember a maintenance guy doing it, but all i found was a ginormous hair ball (i think it was alive) since it seems the pipe slopes. perhaps it is still in the loop below the sink, but i’d break the whole house if i tried to get it. so i guess it’s gone.

  1. what was it made out of? if it was a magnetic metal you could tie a string around a magnet and try to let that see if it can pick it up

  2. Are you sure the hairball didn’t eat it?

Seriously, if you want to give it a try, as long as you didn’t run the water it should be down in the trap. Put a bucket or pan under the trap and unscrew the 2 big pressure “nuts” on each end. From here you should be able to pull down on the trap and rotate it from the drain connection.

    Re-assemble in reverse.

      • yup what he said…it is a really simple thing to do, I have total faith in you two to be able to do it…those big octangular looking things on either side of the ‘trap’ (the loopy thing under the sink) prolly arent very tight, you should be able to even do it yourself…just make sure you put something underthere so it doesnt leak all over…if I was there I could do it for you in like one min 🙂

      • you can do it…

There are basically two types of sink traps. Those with quick access and those without. Check out this pic. It really is very easy to do, they are designed to be removed for just that reason.

Good diagrams! The u-shaped bend in the pipe is what’s called the “trap”, so named because it remains filled with water (water gets “trapped” there). The reason for the water in the trap is it prevents air from the “business end” of the drain (where it goes into the wall and eventually into the sewer) from coming back into the house.

I’m sure you were dying to know that.

If you didn’t run water through the drain since dropping the object in, it should still be in the trap. Be sure you’ve got a bucket when opening the trap, because it *will* be full of water (and run water after reassembling to refill the trap and check for leaks).

  3. hmm.. could Danny get it back?

I’m awful at that type of stuff, so I make my daddy do everything like that. He’s pulled contacts out of drains sooo many times. haha
