stephanie is: ugh ugh…

i’m real sad about my hair. a month ago the puppy yanked my braid hard in the middle back. a few days later i realized it was kind of frizzled and messed up there. i tried being super gentle but the hair has just been breaking off there ever since. now there is nearly a complete hole in my hair in the back. i can’t even do two pigtails anymore without heaps of hairspray cause it can’t reach in spots.

i don’t know what to do. i’d have to cut my hair to chin length to sort of even it out. i’d look awful cause i have the finest hair on the planet. but at least it would stop spliting higher and higher. my only other option is keeping it pulled back for months and slowly cutting the rest till it is even again in like a year. either way i’d prolly end up at the same length eventually instead of continuing to grow it longer like i’ve dreamed of.

i feel so stupid that i want to cry over my hair, but seeing that little ball of frizzed broken off hair in my wide toothed comb today upset me… so far the only opinons on it i’ve gotten are “just deal with it” and “don’t cut it!”… sigh…

what to do…

  1. fine hair

Fine hair can look nice short! Try going to a good hairstylist (hopefully you already have one that knows you, your style, and your hair — if not, ask a friend who’s hair you like) and ask about short hair options for your face shape and your hair. I used to be scared of short hair too, but recently got a flippy layered haircut that would look just gross on someone with thick hair, and I like it so much better than my old, long, stringy, straight hair.

    Just a thought…

    Good luck!

  2. sorry, love 🙁

after doing major bleaching with my hair ( usually it makes my hair feel nice but i guess doing it twice wasn’t a good thing since my hair is thin.. ) pieces literally melted off so that my hair is full of uneven chunks..i do not want short hair after growing it out for so long so i’m prolly gonna have to just trim it as it grows like you mentioned..

if you do that to your hair do you think it will still keep spliting? i know you grew your hair out for so long, it would suck to cut a lot of it off 🙁

    *hugs*

  3. *hugs!* I had to cut mine off because it was so dry and damaged at the ends. I was trying to grow it long again too. I do think you’d look cute with shorter hair. Hair tends to be fuller when shorter, less weight and all. I ruv r00!

    • i had mine cut to just above my shoulders when i was 14. it was healthy but it flipped out in one directions on both sides like the wind was blowing it or something. i could never get it to go under towards my face on both sides.

i am scared of hair cutters. i havn’t been in years and years and years. i just trim a half inch myself per month. i’m afraid if i go it will be super expensive or it will be a disaster. i don’t have any girlies to go with me.

      • I always go to super cheap places like supercuts. A shampoo (optional) and cut was $15 there. I get all nervous beforehand though. I’ve never gotten any -really- bad cuts, but sometimes you have to remind them several times what to do. I usually tell them I want my hair a tiny bit longer than I actually do. That way they don’t screw up. 😉

        • i’ve always had bad luck at hair places, bleh. i need a friend to go with me and say “bitch please! she said leave the bangs alone!”

  4. at least it wouldnt be “boy short” when I was in high school my aunt permed my hair and it all fell out… all my hair was like and inch long and frizzy.. I had a curly fro 🙁
I cried for days because it happened the weekend before school pictures…
If I were you sweetie I would cut it all one length and buy some Mane N Tail shampoo and conditioner and use that. It made my hair grow fast when mine fell out. I wouldn’t dye it anymore for awhile either 🙁

    • well i had been avoiding bleach but that hasn’t helped. my hair is more it’s natural color – darker blonde underneath with streakies from sun and whatnot.

i am not brave enough to go get it cut on my own. i know i’ll look ugly with it done. danny doesn’t care about that sort of thing so he’s no help – silly boys :b

    • that shampoo does work very nice. i’ve been using it since i bleached my hair and i love it. just a few days after using it after bleaching, i could already see my roots growing back.

  5. Im sorry :/ my mums hair is super thin because of her hormone medication and she uses some kind of special hair stuff to try and keep hers thicker.. it works pretty well for her but she still hast to do malibu treatments monthly to keep our well water from eating up her hair…

  6. Thin hair…

Nice medium lengths (chin length) work well for fine hair. It tends to be limp when it’s long or super short unless you have layers and style it every day. I have fine hair as well, and I’ve always wanted to have long hair, but I’ve just resolved myself to the fact that super long hair just doesn’t work well for me.

If you cut your hair and put in some soft layers, you hair will actually appear fuller. Also, you’ll probably want to cut off the damaged hair before you suffer more breakage and splitting. It will only get worse if you leave it alone.

A hair cut isn’t a huge deal. It’s only hair, it’ll grow back. It’s not as if your hair defines who you are as a person. My best advice is to go to a reputable salon (like Rocco Altobelli if you have them out there). It will cost more ($25-40), but it will be worth it. Places like Cost Cutters or Great Clips are fine for trims, but if you are unsure and your hair is damaged, spend the extra money. The people who work there are trained to deal with all sorts of hair, and they’ll have a good idea of what needs to be done to fix your hair. That’s their job. So don’t waste your time worrying about it and let a professional deal with it once and for all. You aren’t going to solve anything by just leaving it alone and hoping that it will eventually grow out properly or by treating it yourself.

    • Re: Thin hair…

      Good points, and good advice!

A good hairdresser will know how to make your hair look awesome, and will listen to what you want. Since you don’t normally go to one, Steph, look around at some different salons and see if you like their atmosphere. Definitely avoid the cheapo ones, though. A good haircut is a good investment — it lasts for months, helps you feel attractive, and should be easier to style than a bad haircut.

      • Re: Thin hair…

that is what i was thinking… i’m not sure i trust a hairstylist to *really* listen to my concerns when they are getting paid $6/hour.

but i know nothing of hair salons. they all look scary and posh. not a place for a silly girl like me.

anyone have a favorite salon in northern va they want to take me too?

        • Re: Thin hair…

Hey there, Stephanie! I know of a great stylist in Springfield. I first went to her when I was 15, and I’ve tried out many others since then, but I always come back to her. She’s talented, friendly, and fairly conservative (very stylish, but nothing totally outrageous). Her salon’s prices are mid-range: higher than places like Hair Cuttery, cheaper than fancy salons.

I need a trim myself… if you’re interested, you could join me. Just let me know.

          🙂

  7. Ohhhh, I feel for you!!!
I know EXACTLY how you feel about this hair situation and it sucks.

I have super fine hair and just about EVERY single time I’ve ever gotten a haircut, I’ve cried. And although I’m not a big weasel when it comes to the rest of my life, for some reason I clam up and feel stupid when I get into that chair and the feel like I don’t have the right to tell the hairstylist EXACTLY what needs to be done. I just hold my breath and always seem to leave with something that disappoints me. But here are a few things I’ve learned over the years that might help you in your decision about what to do:

    1) If you go, take a good friend. One that makes you feel safe, and grounded…that will love you even if you shaved your head. One that isn’t hooked on your long hair (like my boyfriend really LIKED my long hair,…so he wasn’t the best one for me to take 😉

    2) Go to the very best place you can afford – and when making the appointment, ask for one of their hairstylists with the most years experience, or the Master Level. They typically have a long wait. A good stylist makes a difference.

    3) Don’t get fed up one day and pop over to the cheap chain cutters. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this and regretted it. (Just Sept 1st actually. BIG MISTAKE.)

    4) I’ve always “pained” to have long hair, and have had it, and it constantly got to the point where it would just start getting really fragile and breaking…and took forever for me to comb out the tangles (it’s like angel hair, so when wet, it gets matted.) It just works better shorter, right at my shoulders, and with the right cut, it may look fuller and more fun. I have to keep reminding myself of this every time it starts to get to the “breaking” point.

Anyway, good luck and I’m sorry ’cause I really know the feeling.

For what it’s worth, you have such a nice face a wonderful new haircut would just show it off even more!

  8. i have baby fine hair and it looks fine, i think, at any length. in fact, i have this cycle where i grow it out to my elbows, then chop it all off because i get sick of it.
short, long, and in between. i actually liked my in-between hair a lot. it was this bobbed wedge style, where the bob was cut on an angle front to back, so the back part of the bob was shorter (nape-length) than the long front part (chin length).

    • i think i may have to go with something angled… the ripped part is at the nape of my heck but i don’t want the front that short. it’s either that or do it all in two stages so i can get it evened out. bleh.

  9. I also have super fine hair but I just recently cut it to about chin length. I love it! I think it looks better shorter. When I used to get it cut short, but all one length, I hated it. If you got it layered a little bit it wouldn’t flip out all over the place. 🙂

  10. I think the solution you arrived at, of trimming it a bit and then letting it slowly grow in, is probably the best bet. You can do more with your hair that length than you can with it chin length. Then again, I have been growing mine out for a whole year and it’s just chin length now. boring!
