stephanie is: at work at work.

so our t1 will be turned on today. danny is at home taking care of it (well, he is prolly still asleep, that bastard. hehe). he and a friend did the inside wiring last night. i was doing site work then i looked up at my computer clock to see it was 11pm. eek! so i stopped and make myself some curry raman noodles for dinner then went to bed.

i have more to do on my site, but then we’ll move the dns back. current members will have free access at first, but then they will have to decide if they want to resignup under the new system. there will be a discounted price on lifetime memberships for them as well. i’d like the site to at least pay back a little bit of the 800/month we have to start paying now. bleh thats like rent on a small apartment, heh. i certainly know that i’m not going to be making a profit off the site but the more it can help out the better. so i am pretty motivated to make my site get better and better.

the streaming cam will only be free today and friday, so watch for free while you can. members will have that crappy work stream plus the return of the home stream (that has sound).

ahhhh bandwidth! i can’t wait!

  1. Yay! Woohoo!

It’s going to SO wonderful having my favorite site back up and running at full speed!
    *does a happy little dance*
    Rock on, Steph! 🙂

  2. Whoa. $800 for a small apartment?? I know people have told me that rent is cheap in Oklahoma…but damn! For a nice apartment, it’s usually around 4-500 bucks! I lived in a really nice two bedroom town house for $550! I dunno if it’s because I live in a college town or what?!

      • Yes, I live around where stephanie does (dc area) and my boyfriend lives in an efficiency (basically one room, small kitchen, one bathroom) and he pays almost $750/month. Some places are worse b/c he has paid utilities. Luckily we are moving to a much bigger place with roomates, so we’llhave more room and LESS rent..YAY.

  3. Hey punquin! I haven’t read all of your LJ, so I may not be ‘in the know’, but why would you guys get a T1 at home instead of DSL?
DSL is vastly cheaper and the same bandwidth. Is it not available in your area?
I have it at home, and LOVE it!

  4. A few points…

Rent is definitely a relative thing depending on the area. Here in San Jose, I have a friend that’s living in a zero bedroom mini studio apartment that costs him $1400/mo. A place like that in Manhattan would cost a bit more.

DSL is considered an access service by the ISPs that provide it. ISPs do not expect their DSL customers to have servers. They also oversubscribe quite a bit. Business grade DSL is oversubscribed less and might be considered appropriate for a mail server or a low-traffic web server. It certainly wouldn’t be considered appropriate for a medium traffic website such as stvlive. That’s not to say that Stephanie doesn’t get a lot of hits, but I would consider high-traffic to be several hundred thousand hits a day. Then there’s sites like yahoo and cnn that take millions.

Congrats on your T1 Stephanie, I’m jealous.

    • Re: A few points…

true, but didnt know how much traffic stvlive actually gets, so i was thinking business-class DSL could be a better/cheaper solution.

  5. I remember when I worked as an admin for an ISP, I snagged a free T1 for a period of 3 years while I worked there. We had to trick the Apt complex by telling them that we weren’t really installing a second phone line to the apt, instead it was just a ‘modifcation’ to the primary line. They bought it cuz they had no idea what I was talking about.

    I miss my T-1.

    I’m sure you’ll love yours!
