stephanie is: cold cold…

brrrr it is cold here at work! i am eating a warm strawberry poptart today, mmmmm. i am waiting to get conent for the site that is supposed to go live on sunday. nothing new so far… but i have some other things to do to it as well.

i couldn’t post at all last night because i couldn’t reach livejournal. hopefully the new servers will fix all the downtime. it seems tlike as soon as the west coast people wake up around noon my time lj goes to hell.

we did here from the t1 people. we are now at the stage where we sit and wait for whorizon to do their part. we could have the t1 in 3-4 weeks (or more.. who knows). i have been trying to decide what to do money-wise for the member’s section of my site. unfortunatly danny and i have already realized the guest cam has to be set to 5 minutes instead of two, and i have the huge task of making the archives guest/member instead of all free. this is because if we use too much bandwidth we get charged additional fees on top of the $900/month. the system i had been using was to let each person give a one time donation of $5 or more. yes, most people gave only $5-$10 just once. in order to pay for half of the t1 every month using that method, i would have to attract 45-90 new members every month. that just won’t happen. i think i have 100-150 total from like 5 months.i don’t want to show my girlie bits so i can’t attract the people wanting to spend money for porn. (for those wanting a perspective on how much i would be willing to bare on cam – i mostly think of the cam as another window into my house. i would not walk past it naked.) hrmmm. i could do something like $5/month memberships with a $50/lifetime membership option… or maybe monthly is too much and i should do 3, 6, and 12 month increments. argh i’m bad at money. i need to figure out the point at which the site will cover as much of it’s costs as it can but with the members still happy with the fees… think think think…

  1. Just a thought.

Maybe you should take a poll of what people may be willing to pay. A possibilty would be a start-up sort of fee and then smaller monthly fees. You could also push more merchandise. I love your designs. I am really bummed that it is so difficult for you. I miss the good old days.

merchandice costs to much to make (uless is is cafepress, but i have made like $40 total on that).

sorry my site can’t be free, but people view it so much that it costs me a lot. i know people would rather my site be free – my free temporary streaming has been hammered lately. the site has just grown beyond my ability to pay for it.

When I said good old days I meant that I miss the site. I don’t mind paying. I don’t think that anyone would expect a site as rich as yours was/is in content to be free. Remember your time is valuable and you have great skills and abilities. I know it must take more work to find people who don’t require pornography to be entertained. I personally just enjoy seeing your talent. I have to say I am a bit envious of that. I think what you offer is high quality, relitively innocent, and fun. I truely wish you the best luck and I am just trying to be supportive of some people that I think are genuinly nice and admirable. If I can help in even the smallest way I would be happy to.

thank you – i miss my site too grr grr! but i am trying to add add add to it while it is down. it’s a bitch though cause i can on;y upload or work on perl scripts from my home puter through ssh…

          • I feel your pain. By the way, I really like that picture of you from the Christmas party which you have been using. You look all happy and sweet. What a great smile you have. It is contagious. I am going to go sleep now. It is my friday night woohoo! Goodnight.

  2. membership

I think you are heading down the right path with your ideas on how much and for what you will charge for memberships.

Your time and talent is worth the cost for the privilege (not our right as some have implied in the past) to be a part of your community in some way.

Your decission to not show the “girlie bits” is a good one. If people want porn thay should go elsewhere.

Whatever you go with, count me in.

  3. Wait.. $900 a month for a T1?

You’re paying $900 a month for a T1? And you have to “pay extra” for bandwidth? That means you probably have a fractional T1, and it’s burstable up to 1.5mb. Watch you guys are getting ripped and getting 128k or 256k sustained and the rest you have to pay for… RIPOFF!

Did you guys actually look around? For $900 you should be able to get a FULL T1 with _NO_ bandwidth restrictions easily. $1200 is what Sprint charges for an unlimited T1, and they’re a national carrier – so you can definitley go cheaper.

Running a website over your own link is expensive, no doubt. But I certainly hope you have done your homework as it will save you a lot of headache down the road.. it just doesn’t sound like you guys are getting a good deal at ALL.

    • Re: Wait.. $900 a month for a T1?

we have a full t1. it would cost us $1200/month if we payed the full price. same as just about everyone charges out here. however if we stay under a certain amount of bandwidth, we pay $900/month. that is a pretty good deal – i’d rather not pay for the full bandwidth on months we don’t use it.

but anyway danny is the expert about all this stuff. pout and ask when the internet will be un-broked… hehe

  4. Options…

Most of the national providers are going to charge around $1,000 per month for a T1 plus the local loop. So there’s really not much of a deal to be found there. I believe T1s for employees at my company are costed at around $800 per month. ISPs will haggle on price though. Some smaller ISPs will offer better deals as well. I know there is a coop in the bay area for example that will do a T1 for local loop plus $300. One can never be certain of reliability though.

One other consideration would be to co-lo your server at a web-hosting provider. That will probably end up being a few hundred dollars a month. Additionally, some companies won’t charge for additional bandwidth unless you exceed an average of a few Mbps. That doesn’t sound like much, but that would have to be continuous traffic, which is a lot.

    • Re: Options…

we considered the colo- but our servers aren’t colo servers. we would have to drop up to 5000 or whatever it costs to buy one good one to put everything on. plus, we can’t get dsl or cable or anything other than dailup in our area, so the t1 solves both the server issues and the broadband issue…

  5. Sounds like you are …

soulnds like you are willing to waste a lot of money for a hobby site. I would imagine paying so much for nothing. the least you should do to make some money to break even at least is host sites for people or offer services. just my $0.02
