stephanie is: quiet quiet.

so we have explored all out options. we have no options except a t1. our development is too new. we can’t get dsl, cable, satelite… only a t1. we found out that some neighbors are having the same problem. we thought we were 6000 ft from our co, but it turns out they took the long way when running the cables and it is actually 21000 ft. and our high tech fiberoptic lines arn’t really good for anything other than phone at this point.

but how can we afford the t1? it costs $5k to install. lets just pretend that we took care of that. it costs $900/mo. that is $500 more per month that we had budgeted for. can my site make enough money to pay the difference? or maybe hosting sites? my dad is willing to help us at first, but we need to be confident that we can handle this on top of our $2k monthly mortgage bill. argh. i simply can’t live with a dial up – not in my career (web designer). so i don’t have a choice. but i do want to know that i will have enough money to eat every month….

  1. i don’t know how big your server is, but right now we’re only running on a dedicated server (800MHz P3, 256KBcache 256MB ECC RAM9 GB, 10K SCSI)(until we can afford one of our own)(which isn’t that great, i’m sure you guys have got something much nicer)
And we host about 50 sites currently with room for more. (of course none of these are large, cam sites, but if you charge 15-20 a month for simple, run of the mill hosting. you could easily make 1K a month.)
good luck guys. **super warm snugglie hugs**

    • it’s not just the server – i can’t get any connection to the internet besides a dialup or the t1. i need more that a dialup for both my cams, and for working from home. we could try to colo, but that would leave us with no broadband solution at home.

  2. Although it won’t help when you’re writing the check every month, at least you can deduct a % on your taxes each year and I’m sure it will get cheaper as more technology moves into your neighborhood. Maybe your job would pay for the installation if it’s necessary for your work?

  3. messy

    Wow,
    What a mess !
To me the hosting sounds like a good idea.
Theres got to be plenty power there.
For the local connection (as last resort)
    someone did mention ISDN.
We solve some of connectivity problems at work with that.
You can at least get 128KB (2*64kb) which could handle two cams.
    Not your ideal solution.

On the other hand, you do NOT want to screw up the experience of owning a new home because you feel tight every month. You’ll always have the urge to buy something “new” for the house/garage/yard whatever… so that will impact your spending also.

    Later…

  4. share with your neighbors?

if your neighbors want broadband too, why not buy the t1, and then offer it to your neighbors for a decent portion of the cost per month?

      • Re: share with your neighbors?

okay, well it seems they are still looking into it – now they are looking into wireless lans to share the connection…

      • Re: share with your neighbors?

        why not?

i work for a small company in an office complex, and we offered our t1 to other companies in the complex, so the t1 pays for itself now because of it.

but, at least with a t1 you can offer hosting or colo’s to other people though to help offset the cost too..

  5. Steph, since I am the official ignorant spaz-master(tm) when it comes to all of this network stuff, tell me if I understand you with regard to your housing complex fiberoptics. Fiberoptic cable is the cutting edge but the telcos (etc.) have not yet invented (or upgraded to) technologies (besides phone) that can take advantage of its capabilities? You have kick ass lines but nothing but phone service to hook up to them? I think I read in Dan’s journal that DSL only works through copper?

    Bummer. I want my stvlive…..:)

  6. DSL only runs on copper, so like using Dial-Up it uses your phone lines to get to you, and you out to the Internet. Unlike Dial-Up it runs at a different frequency than your phone line, so you’re able to talk on the phone and cruise the net simultaneously.

Its a neat trick but fiber and cable is the way to go. There are some parts of the country where the copper lines are so old that DSL will never work on them, and the telco’s won’t spend the money, pending a natural disaster like a hurricane, to replace them with the stuff that will work.

  7. T1 and hosting

If you do plan on the T1 solution, and are thinking about hosting sites, please let me know. I am currently looking for a host. It would be nice to host my site with some people I trust, and help out at the same time.

    Dave S.

  8. on a slightly related note

I am sending an Email to macaddict about your site, as they just interviewed Jennifer (from Jennicam.org) as a Mac user camgirl, and if we can get you mentioned in the next issue, I bet you will see an increase in activity, and hopefully an increase in contributions to help you pay your bills…

sooooo I guess what I’m saying is EVERYONE email [email protected] and tell them about stvlive!!!

I’m sure if they get enough letters they will mention the site, and maybe even profile Stephanie in the mag…

    fight the good fight

  9. costs

Hosting would certainly help reduce the cost and probably give you a good tax situation to boot.

I said it before and I’ll say it again; I think most of the regular friends and fans of your site would, I hope, be ok with a more formal membership scenerio with out changing your content (read porn). I know it’s nice to be able to offer your site to everyone for a modest donation of which you do not even stipulate a minimum or even how often (if ever) we should donate again but the reality is a matter economics.

I consider the donations I’ve made as a version of “supporting the arts” and will continue to make regular donations just to see you continue.

I know you didn’t start this to be a business but you need to cover your costs.

    Just my 2 bits
