stephanie is: at a loss at a loss.

so dan just told me that covad replied. no dsl. what is the point of building a bell atlantech wired house that can’t get dsl? sad thing is i am not suprised. so much has gone wrong in the process, why not have it competely fuck up? danny says our other option is a t1. he is getting a quote on that today. we could get a burstable one so we would pay for what we use. (this means higher bandwidth items will HAVE to be for members only when the site is back… sorry :(… ) that could mean about $500-$1000 a month (we have been paying $400/mo). that is really tough seeing as how we are about to start paying double what our rent was for the mortgage and inurance.

and installation? $5000.

i am too shocked to even wrap my mind around it. memberships were nearly paying for our $400/mo connection before the site went down, but… i just don’t have the kind of site that can bring in much more every month (i.e. an adult one).

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhrrr. grr grr grr. asdfui4398#(@jfe0@#)#!

  1. i sympathise. it’s a fortune here as well for anything. i’ve been working on trying to get isdn for over a year now, and STILL no go. the company says 25th december, but of course they didn’t specify what year. πŸ˜‰

lots of love and warm hugs,
    C.

  2. steph, this is off-topic, but since you ARE the livejournal goddess, maybe you know.

how can i make my posts private? i tried the ‘friends’ only on the security option, but it still shows in journals of people who list me. basically, i want it to show in ONLY the friends who I list, not the ones that list me as a friend. is there a way to do this?

    πŸ™‚

    • Friends-Only Posts…

should have a little padlock icon on them. If you’re logged in, you’ll be seeing your own friends-only posts anywhere you go (ie, other people’s friends pages). That little lock means you’re allowed to view them–but not everyone in the world. Try looking at the same pages when you’re not logged in–the private and friends-only posts should disappear.

  3. That just sucks out loud!
I had nothing but trouble getting DSL installed at my apartment. They are the stupidist people in the world all working together making my life miserable and taking my money. I hope things work out.

  4. My neighbor works for Bell Satantic as a techie .. and HE COULD NOT GET DSL WORKING. Terrible customer service … braindead assistance. He finally told them to screw.

TG for my 14.4 dial up modem.

A T1 line sounds like overkill and more money than I would pay … but I am the cheapest person on earth … heh

    Good luck !!

    • overkill?

A T1 has always been a very feasible option for us. You have to remember, we have been pushing our dsl to handle hosting. It was not designed for such use, and the support for it shows. Even paying for business service, DSL is not considered mission critical, and you still have the telco to deal with, who does not give a shit about sdsl subscribers, because they get no money from them. This is not such a bad thing overall, it just sucks to hafta pay more.

  5. i am not sure if you are looking into this already but were you thinking a whole T1 or leasing part of one? i know someplaces you can just get part. but you said you’d get one that you only pay for bandwidth so never mind πŸ™‚ also i know in mpls if uswest says no to dsl there’s a few other places that for somereason and i don’t know how, can offer you dsl. any places like that where you are?

  6. I would very much hate having to go back to having dial-up as my primary means of internet connection. Its too bad you couldn’t set up a wireless solution. Is it just your home cannot get dsl, or the nearest CO isn’t set up for dsl? I’d think the covad or BA would retrofit the CO with dsl if there was enough demand for it.

Band your neighbors together to petition Covad or BA to bring out dsl to your area.

  7. Any hope for a cable modem connection? We have a cable company called Time-Warner that has “Roadrunner”. It is basically a cable modem connection with speeds similar to those of DSL. Probably not robust enough for you though. Good luck.

We just moved and had so much trouble getting normal phones connected. I think a requirement for Ameritech/AT&T customer service is to have youbrains sucked out with a straw (or a rusty spoon).

  8. frame

One option you may consider is Frame Relay. Installation isn’t much cheaper but you can start with a lower bandwidth and move up to full T1 when needed. Each area is different so sometimes this can actually cost you more than metered T1.
For reference, cost for a un-metered full T1/ frame relay connection here in Seattle is $1100.00/mo

    To add one more comment:

Stephanie, I’d hate to see one of the few decent, artistic sites go away. I’m sure many (hopefully most) of your current members would be willing to pony up on a regular basis for memberships without the site stooping to porn.

    • Re: members

hi stephanie, and i agree with members paying more, i would miss this site and you very much and i dont have much of a life as it is and going to your site is something i really enjoy and helps pass the lonely nights here. so iam willing to pay more and i can do it monthly and will wait to see what you want to do, PLEASE HELP KEEP STVLIVE ONLINE EVERYONE AND GIVE WHAT YOU CAN,,,I KNOW I WILL,,,,your friend always in louisville,ky,,,,,Jim,,,,=)

    • Re: This is actually KiMiE’s husband…

That is pretty cool. I’ve been working with Internet service companies for several years and satellite data access has always been pretty prohibitive for real time data applications and worked better for slower data transfers or usage based data transfers. The cost for StarBand is reasonably cheap and might be a good alternative.

The other option is to see if there is anyone in your area that’s offering MMDS service. The only reason I know about this is because I’m working for the Sprint MMDS group right now and they’ve got their product deployed in several large markets, but I don’t think they’re anywhere in the East Coast area.

Here’s a list of some trial MMDS sites. One of them is Dalevile, VA, I’m not sure if that’s near you though. There’s also a list of MMDS providers in the US.

I hope some of this is helpful.

      =)

  10. wow

Omygod, that’s horrid. Blah….so much money!!! I’m sorry. With all this good advice though that i see here, i’m sure you’ll come up with a good solution. =) meow.

  11. I’m sorry :(…we went through the same thing when we first got our SDSL…one of the options they said we could do is pay to have a new ‘trunk’ ran down our street (in our case we have old wire instead of fiber)…it was going to be about $1200 upfront…but then they figured out that we didnt need to after many hours of screaming on the phone…that would only help depending on how long your fiber run actually is…this is our main reason we havent moved yet….now that we have our DSL we are scared to move into a place that we cant get it and the F***ing telcos cannot/will not help you figure out wether or not the area you are going to has DSL before you move…

  12. Ick… ick ick.. remember when I moved into my new apartment and everything got all fucked up with the net connection and I was down forever? *grrrrrrr*

all of my sympathies out to you. *sigh*

  13. Dedicated Pro ?

    Stephanie,

I don’t know you that well but I presume the idea is to run and control your own server and thus the idea of having a DSL at home. Giving you full control. I have a cable modem and would like to do the same but the “uplink” speed is too slow.

As an alternative though for $19.95 per month I get 250 MegaBytes disk space and mucho bandwidth (for me). Now if you take that and multiply x 20
you should get close to a dedicated server.
Ehh, like below. Like I said it could be an “alternative” to a,,,, ehhh, dial-up,, hehe.

Then again I do not know the full story ?

See the dedicated Pro system below.

    Cheers and good luck !

  14. Good Luck

Good Luck you guys, I am sure you’ll come up with something. Don’t sweat it too much, we’ll still come back to the site, whenever you get it back up there.
