bitchy

i had posted about a girl that has copied people’s webpages again and again and again. i hadn’t planned to post about it – i was just going to email her. but danny thought i should. after an hour it had already turned into a flame war so i deleted the post completely. there were already a bunch of people writing about how wrong it was. then there were the few that always post anon. about how they can’t see any simularity even though i had written that she took exact html code from me. grr. i just don’t want to go through that whole drama again. fuck it. steal away. who cares.

I know how it is to have people copy things, but what I have seen copied off your site is the way you do your picture galleries. That is so obviously copied. I thought about coding it myself, but even thought that that was too much.

You have a very cool way of doing things, you’re very much an inspiration to me. I think what really makes me the most upset is the fact that people compliment her on her HTML skills. I roll my eyes, but you know what? You can only go so far copying people, I hope she doesn’t expect to go into webdesign as a job.

Okay now I’m being mean, I guess because I hate to see people copy you so closely.

    :{
    I hope you feel better.
My motto (given to me by a close friend) is:
    “F*ck ’em …”

    Karma baby.

thanks… that is pretty much how i feel about the whole thing…

i don’t mind people asking to use my ideas ahead of time – i will even hep them! i just hope they at least have a concious to understand that they are stealing…

  2. replication and authentication

Its always a heated arugment over stuff like that :/ Just remember. You are what makes the web. The people that sit there and copy you, they are just followers. They will never amount to who or what you are no matter how hard they try , so don’t worry they wont reach anything as good and close to you and your work 🙂 you will always be far better then the replication. Just know this in and out and nothing can get in your way.

      • Stephanie,

Email me and I will send you the anti theft script so they can’t steal your code. I think it might be in order for you to start using it. I have it for you if you want it 🙂

        • hm.. i have one that i use on my live cam frames… maybe it is simular to what you have? i don’t want to have to put it on all my pages though 🙁

        • You’re funny. Anti theft script for html… hahaha, hohoho, hehehe. Sorry to be so blunt but until there is a browser that doesn’t need to download the code to run it there is no such thing. Care for me to prove it? Point me to anything and ask for the code. You really think you have something worth stealing????????? I haven’t seen it.

  3. it’s definatley frustrating when someone copies your work.

i imagine the insult would be much worse though, if you ran your website to make money, because then this person would be putting herself in direct competition with you.

I’m not the most web savy of people, is there any sort of copy right that someone can apply to their site design?

Stealing art, copying art, borrowing art is a really hard call.

what are your thoughts on mp3s?

  4. Code theft

I hate to see someone steal but the simple facts are that the source to whatever you create on the web is accessable in some manner. Some are easy to get, some are not so easy especially for the lame types that might want to steal it. Most coders will keep snippets of things they may like to use for reference but talented people merely use it as a reference point and don’t just copy and paste.

Its a sign of the times Folks…
Look at how well Napster is doing…
I hope none of you are using Napster…
      Or downloading songs for free…
      Its theft clear and simple…

I think Napster should be sued…
The person who post copyrighted material should be sued…
And the person who downloads it…

It is called Intellectual property rights.
I work for a large performing rights company..
So it is not hard for me to get worked up over this stuff.

So never give up Stephanie… You are right… Don’t let people steal from you….
go get em when you find em …..
      Expose them….

Not much else you can do now…
But that is better than just given up.

      • Re: Code theft

that is such a fucking moronic statement. I have 4 gigs of mp3s I got off Napster…and ya know what..it made me turn around and buy at least 1/3 of the cds. Getting mp3s off Napster in no way resembles stealing HTML code. I spend hours every day writing custom code either for customers or for myself and I can see the difference. I don’t think one neophite user out there has been like “WOW, I LIKE THAT CODE…IT MAKES ME WANT TO GIVE THAT PERSON MONEY BECAUSE I WANT TO BE SURROUNDED BY IT”… think about it.

        • Re: Code theft

It does not matter how many CDs you bought since Napster or mp3s came into existence. What is important is do you have copies of copyrighted material that you did not pay for.

Stephanie works for hours and hours to make this site look just the way she wants. She has her own look and feel from page to page. She has spent years learning to make this and other sites appear just the way she wants. And this attracts many visitors, like me to her site. This is her intellectual property. This is her hard work. These are here Ideas of what makes a good web site. What right do you or I have to steal her hard work? To steal her ideas, Is this really what you want. For people to give away their work. To give away their Ideas. I ask you to think about what you are saying.

People who I have met that think this way tend to have no Ideas of there own so they don’t see the importance.

          • Re: Code theft

This much I am well aware of as I work with Steph and have known her since I was in college.

Go to this http://www.dictionary.com and look up art. No where in the definition of art does it say art is for money/profit/etc. Steph up until now has never asked for money for her site, nor would she if hosting costs weren’t so high.

I choose to download art in the form of music, and in turn purchase cds from the artists that I like… I am not stealing loops and riffs from the music I listen to, in order to produce music of my own.

Your argument is without point unless you are fingering people who download mp3s to make mix cds for sale or some other financial gain

          • Re: Code theft

Ok look up the word FOOD in the dictionary. No where in the definition is a mention of monetary value. How about clothes don’t we buy and sales clothes no mention there. Or tools or cars. This argument that art should be free is mostly made by artist who’s art doesn’t sale.

Now on to your idea that it is only the resale or taking peoples ‘Riffs’ that should be illegal it falls short in this way.
A copyright is just that a copyright? It means just what it sounds like it means, a right to all copies.
It is so simple it tends to go over peoples head somehow. If you have a copy you did not pay for or obtain the rights to it is an illegal copy. It does not matter if you think art should be free or not.

Lets look at some of Stephanie’s art.. She has a new design on her T-shirts of a cute little monkey thing. I think that is neat. Very artistic. Lets say some dude works for Walt Disney and steals that very image and launches a cartoon called Walt Disney’s Purple Monkey’s. Everyone including you can see that the image has been stolen. Without Intellectual property rights there is no recourse for the original artist (Stephanie). Do you not see the crime?

Ok so what you don’t make money off your stolen songs. Neither does the person who owns the copyrights. And they have a right to all copies for money or permission. It is so simple it is scary. But people who want something for nothing want to cloud a very simple issue.

And I think I could make just as good a case for food being free as you make for Art being free.

  5. Who Cares !?

Everyone who has a web site should care. Web sites like yours are very artistic and you have every right under the law that you artistic expressions not be stolen. Right now it is very hard to almost impossible to stop people from copying HTML. We are setting a precedent in these times. Web browsers were made for ease of use and compatibility. Not much thought was put into protecting peoples copyright laws.

But I think web page designers like yourself have every right to demand something be done.

Copyright protects expression. The Copyright Act of 1976 states that the items of expression can include literary, dramatic, and musical works; pantomimes and choreography; pictorial, graphic and sculptural works; audio-visual works; sound recordings; and architectural works. An original expression is eligible for copyright protection as soon as it is fixed in a tangible form.

Consequently, almost any original expression that is fixed in a tangible form is protected as soon as it is expressed. For example, a graphic created in Photoshop is protected as soon as the file is saved to disk. Web pages are protected as soon as the writer stoppes typing and saves the html file. Most of the items that you are likely to encounter on the net are eligible for copyright protection, including the text of web pages, ASCII text documents, contents of email and Usenet messages, sound files, graphics files, executable computer programs and computer program listings.
What Copyright doesn’t Protect However, not absolutely everything is eligible for copyright. These are items that by their very nature are not eligible for copyright protection:
     Ideas
     Facts
     Titles
     Names
     Short phrases
     Blank forms

Keep fighting Stephanie it is a good Fight. !

  6. well it keeps the average person from viewing the code. Of course there are ways around anything. This is not a “hacking” competition or any other thing. it does however inhibit some people from stealing code. Usually the very boneheads that steal code and are too dumb to write their own html. If they are too dumb to write their own html then they are usually too dumb to get around a script
