We just took a trip to New York last weekend. Jax did really well on the drive to Long Island.
We drove up on a Thursday. On Friday, Dan dropped his car off to get some work done (the main reason for the trip) and we hopped on the train into Manhattan. It was hot, hot, hot! I wore Jax in the baby carrier the entire time and he did so well! He is like his daddy with how much he sweats, but like me in that he turns red when he gets too hot. So when he would start to get too hot, we made sure to take a break in the air conditioner. In a place like NYC, you never lack someplace to dash into to cool down. We also made sure to stay very, very hydrated. Chilled baby wipes worked well to cool Jax down fast when we stopped for lunch.
We bought a day pass on a double-decker tour bus. It worked out well because we could ride though parts of the city but hope off to walk through the parts we wanted to see better. It also let us get off to cool down. It was hot up there! On our second stretch on the bus in the afternoon, Jax actually wanted to nurse. I covered up, but it was definitely the strangest place I’ve nursed!
The coolest thing we did was go to the top of 30 Rock for a view of the city. Even on a hot, hazy day, it was amazing! Dinner was crowded and overpriced, but it did the job. We took the train back to Long Island and get his car around 10 pm. Long day for the little man, but he was a complete rockstar – fussing only briefly two times (both because he wanted to nurse, so easily fixed.)
On Saturday we drove Long Island through the Hamptons and walked in a park to see the beach and a light house. I found that walk harder to do than the whole day in NYC. It was hot and humid and I was carrying 25 lbs of sweating baby. The ocean took pity on my on the walk back and sent a breeze our way.
Sunday we drove home, and once again, Jax did very well. I sat in the back with him to keep him entertained and full of snacks.
