Danny is in London until Monday afternoon, so of course our internet breaks at home. I don’t know networking stuff, but it seems the wireless router is dying. The wireless works, but nothing plugged in does (including our phone service.) Here is what I have figured out:
Cable modem is where the magical intarwebs comes from. Power-cycling it alone does nothing. Connected to it is a wireless router. The wireless is working. There are two cables coming from that – one to a switch where lots of stuff is plugged in (my desktop, the line up to the DVR and Xbox, etc…) and one to our VoIP thinger (technical term). Neither of those things work. If I power-cycle the wireless router, they start to work again (dial tone!), but only for anywhere from 30 seconds to a half hour. Then the switch and VoIP loose connection again. Ugh. I’m guessing there is some setup involved in a new router (not just plug & play), so I am SOL till Danny gets home. I have to cancel my Rock Band “date” tonight since I can’t log in to Xbox Live. It will be a boring, lonely weekend.
This morning the Starbucks was super, super busy. Go to work, people! 10 am is *my* time to enjoy breakfast and I can’t go inside to eat like you can, as I have a dog with me. There were no free tables, and I had to park 4 stores away (only annoying cause Benny waits in the car while I go in.) Thankfully, a friendly, chatty guy I see there every Friday had a table and I was able to join him. Benny was acting weird. Someone had gotten butter all over the ground (what??) and he licked it up then really, really had to poop. He was too uncomfortable to even sit. Dumbass. So breakfast ended so I could walk him.
I am still trying to decide if I should start putting my new extensions in this weekend. There are 2 weeks until we go to Cabo, and 3 weeks until the wedding. I just really want them to look nice for as long as possible, but I’ve never used this type of hair before. It is expensive and difficult to get, so I don’t want to screw it up before the wedding. I’m a little worried about all the pool and ocean water it will be in during Cabo, but oh well. I can always wear my hair in a bun if it looks crappy by then, I guess. I need to figure out how to wear it at night (since more will be loose) and how often I should let it get wet in the shower (I’d prefer to wash my scalp every day.)
I have no idea if I have Monday off, and there is no one here to ask. Hrm.
I wish I could help with network issues, but I got nothing. I suck at that stuff.
Cable network – try this.
Based on what has worked for my cable internet woes-
If you are using cable for your internet access you can try this:
unplug the power from the wireless router
turn off or unplug the power from the cable modem
disconnect the (cable internet) cable from the wall to the modem
let sit for about 15 mins
re-connect the cable from the wall to the modem
turn on or plug the power back in to the modem
let the modem do it’s thing for a few minutes
plug the power to the router back in
refresh your wireless card/connection on your laptop to get a fresh IP address.
No gurantee but this may work for you.
Next step would be to call the cable company and let them now your access is down.

Re: Cable network – try this.
Well, the cable works fine. The wireless even works fine. I have power-cycled both the cable modem and the wireless router. What *doesn’t* work, is everything else that is plugged in to the internet via the wireless router.
ETA:
It almost feels like a hardware problem on the wireless router… The wireless works, but anything plugged in to the router does not. If I power-cycle it, it works briefly then dies again.
Re: Cable network – try this.
Well that’s a whole ‘nother issue then.
So the wireless works and actually routes traffic to the internet and only the wired items are having the problem?
Normally a router either works or it does’nt or possibly a single port could die but not affect the others. I’m guessing it is a wireless router with a built in switch.
If the router is overheating, I’ve seen this take down the whole unit. I suppose it *could* cause the switch to fail but normally that would also kill your wireless routing as well.
You can try shutting it down for a while to see if it helps but I would’nt hold my breath.
Is there any particular reason you can’t plug the Xbox hoozitz into the cable modem jobber? I mean presumably you’d be at risk for people pwnzing your Xbox but at least you could make your date…
I don’t know if there are more spots on the cable modem to plug the power line internet thinger in that the DVR and Xbox are on into. I’ll look when I get home. But, I’d ask Danny first, I think.
Take the cable that runs from your modem to the wireless router. Remove it from the router and plug it in to the XBOX.
This should allow for at least the XBOX to have Internet connectivity.
Re: Starbucks this morning – I’m fairly certain that was because of all of the lucky s.o.b.’s who also took today off from work as a part of the Memorial holiday weekend. In our neck of the woods, that is also being coupled by school officially being out for the summer…
