Mystery Tree

Another post about the mystery tree in our backyard… My last entry was posted from the car with cell phone photos.

There is a tree in our back yard that is growing little fuzzy greenish-pink fruits. Inside, there is a small white “seed” thing that looks like a white watermelon seed. The inside of the fruit is yellow/green (the brown in the photo is because it had been sitting cut-open for a couple hours).

I found a couple little peach pit things under the tree, but we just had the area re-mulched, so anything old would be buried unless a bird or bunny dug it up. I believe the tree had pink flowers early in spring.

  1. Oh,..

… so they have a stone, it’s only not fully developed yet. In that case I would go for a peach tree. The images of your tree and the one you found online are just too similar. Only that the green of your tree looks more fresh. A short look online showed me that peach trees have indeed pinkish looking blossoms.
I would say let it grow it’s fruits and let youself surprise by mother nature. The only thing you could do is to support the branches later in the summer when the fruits get bigger and more heavy with some poles(a wooden pole with a short plank nailed in the top of it(that looks a bit like a “T”)) and place that under the at heaviest loaded branches, so that they didn’t break. If the potential peaches get colour you could put a bird net over the tree to avoid that birds hack into the fruits. ^_^

  2. you worked out it was a peach 🙂

have a look at where the buds / baby fruits are and thin them out slightly. they should be opposite each other on the stems, not crowded in 3’s or 4’s around it. by thinning the babies you will get better quality and larger mature fruit. (yay for a summer of fruit picking)

also, YUM! peaches and icecream! home made peach puree for bellinis! poached peaches!

  3. OMG, I think I feel all smart and stuff. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a peach tree (my grandpa had a whole orchard of ’em once upon a time), but it was my gut instinct.

Prepare thyselves for peachy goodness later in the summer!

  4. This is the time to give that tree lots of water so the fruit gets a bit bigger. I also dump the ashes from my woodburner out around my peach trees all winter to raise the soil Ph which makes them sweeter.
