Koi Tryptic

Koi Paintings – Backgrounds

Last night, I had to go to the old house to check on how the floors looked (we had them refinished, but they messed up the first time). On the way, I stopped at the craft store to get electric candles to decorate our windows (gotta keep up with the neighbors!) I decided to go ahead and buy three canvases to hang in our master bedroom. Our “feature wall” is just too big and naked. I knew that I wanted to paint koi, but I wasn’t sure exactly how yet.

After dinner, I messed around with colors in photoshop to finis a color palette that would work well for both the painting and our brown/tan bedroom. Once I had a basic idea, I sketched it onto the canvas and started painting. I was up way too late painting, but I didn’t want to stop. I got all the backgrounds done. Next I will do the koi. They will be made up of crisp, flat areas of color – the only shading/blending in the painting will be the “water” background. I can’t wait to finish them and see how they turn out!

Click the thumbnail for some close-ups. All three canvases together measure 6′ x 2′.

  1. those are beautiful! i even love the koi with no colors – it’s calm, peaceful!

my first thought before you said you made them was “where is this craft store so i can buy the awesome art they have there!” πŸ™‚

  2. You are so awesomely talented.

“Gee, that wall looks blank. I’ll just buy some canvas and whip up some paintings to fill it up!”

I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler so I have always been in awe of those who can draw and paint.

  3. Hope your arm will be ok.

Tobey has been the same way with the ice. He won’t poo on it, but insists on finding that one sweet patch of grass to do his biz into. He gets quite frantic in his search for it.

You should see Lula trying to zoom across the ice. When it first came down, she got the zooms, ran to the fence, and slid head first into it. Scary at first, but once she showed she was ok, I couldn’t stop laughing. It was just so typical.
