1. When did you first go online? How much time did you spend on the internet back then?
I first started going “online” through BBSing at age 12 (1988). That is what happens when you the only girl living with two geeks.
We had a 2400 baud modem! Sweet! m/
I continued to BBS throughout middle school and high school. In college (1994) I had a 14k modem on my laptop (Mac 540c) and would dial up through my dorm room. I started out using lynx to get the weather and silly things like tarot readings. I also used the university’s gopher.
By 1997 I had ethernet in my dorm room and made my first website. I used Photoshop 3, BBedit, and I think we were up to Netscape 2 or 3 – they had just added support for tables.
Wow, I feel old.
2. What was your first online addiction (websites, activities, etc…)?
If we are talking old-school, then I used to play this dumb game called “Food Fight” on BBS’s… Anyone remember that?
Really my first addiction was making web pages. As soon as I saw they existed, I had to make them. My dad made a simple page in BBedit to teach me the basics, then I just started viewing the source of pages to continue learning. I am still addicted… There really needs to be more hours in the day for making websites. Seriously.
3. How much time per day do you currently spend online. How much of that time is for work/school?
I spend between 9 and 13 hours online on weekdays. Weekends vary since I do try to escape into the fresh air nowadays. 8 or 9 of those hours spent online are for work.
4. If you were in charge of the internet, what things you would change?
No more web pages that auto-play horrible midi music.
The caps-lock key should be a privilege you earn by not misusing it.
And, more bandwidth for everyone!
