  1. I remember….

seeing her site before the NEW design. The design is much more different than it used to be (since it looked alot like yours). Alot of things are the same ideas of yours but, she stated them a bit different. It’s wierd tho that she put up a B-Day card for herself right when you added yours and her B-Day isn’t until flipping August. The home page is similiar to yours but, not exactly. I guess I’m torn in between saying that her site is like yours..Then again she may just use your site as a learning/cheat sheet. dunno.

    • Re: I remember….

she actually wrote to me a few days ago saying she copied my birthday card idea but put a link to me. she said she used her own code, but if you look at it (see the sign page) most of the code is the same down to the pixel size.

i dunno.. i am trying not to care, but i work so hard at being unique….

      • Re: I remember….

Your right, I wouldn’t care to much about it. Everyone knows your ability to design. She should be the last thing to worry about.

      • Re: I remember….

well, she does have a link to your site under linkage… so i guess, imitation/sincerest/flattery?

keeping ahold of one’s design principles is much harder than keeping people from using your words. i guess it might have something to do with the visual part of the brain being connected to a different port than the audio/verbal part.

i know that i’ve taken ideas from stvlive, things that i could never have thought up on my own, but when i saw them there they immediatly clicked. maybe she is just really really affected by your design principles?

i do think that the “who’s that girl” and “oddities” thing takes it a bit too far though…

        • Re: I remember….

Uh, nevermind. I just looked at the rest of that site. And while I tried to be openminded at first, < cough > totalripoff < / cough >

      • Re: I remember….

repeat to yourself, like a mantra:
‘impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery” and feel like the coding and design goddess she is confirming you as . . . you are the only designer i’ve found that i would want to copy . . . 🙂

      • Re: I remember….

i used to ‘let’ friends persuade me into being upset when people would ‘copy’ my sites. it was all a waste of time. i used to have this cute little totally original ‘hand frameset’ where i scanned my hand with written links all over it, and made it an imagemap. then people would tell me when they discovered other folks copying the idea very blatently. it was a good idea, so of course people are going to copy it. one boy even wrote to me telling me that he was going to use the idea in a brochure he was making. in other words, he was making MONEY off of my idea. but there’s nothing anyone can do, really. people who really like your work will borrow portions of it… it is inevitable. as long as a person doesn’t steal my images, i could now care less about a borrowing of a design, or idea, or whatnot. i do alot of borrowing myself (of html, color schemes, whatnot), but i always change things enough so that it’s mainly mine. and all of this is in a personal website, so it’s not a big deal.

in your specific situation, it’s obvious this girl likes your design.. and she might be too young perhaps (i hate saying things like that… but…) to realize that it is very bad form to copy so closely… especially when she’s in the same kind of community as the copied (like webcams, livejournal…etc.)

        hard decisions there…

        • Re: I remember….

thanks… i try not to worry about it too much as well, but i get reminded by a lot of people… she had a few of my images linked directly once and i changed them on her… hasn’t done that since…

          • Re: I remember….

it also must be a little erksome to read comments in her guestbook that say things like ‘i envy your html skills!’ or ‘this is your best site design ever!’

  2. I was going to say we could gang up on her like we did that other girl, but then I realized it’s the SAME girl!
It’s not a blatant rip off like before, but she still has some stv-like elements.
I thought it was strange that she has a link for a contest, but there’s no contest, just a page that reads “contest”.

  3. eck

uhh.. Is it just a coincidence that she lives in Virginia, has an “Oddities”, “Who’s that girl” section, and likes the same genre of music?

    :p

  4. Hmm..

I think the girl does as very good job of making herself look like an idiot, so there really is nothing you can do. It must really be sad to always have to look to other people, to steal so much from them, in order to feel good about yourself. It is being unique that makes people interesting. Most people know that you’re a super cool sillee unique goobie. 😉 I don’t think anyone is fooled by this girl. Even though it says she is 19, she strikes me as being really young too.

    -hollybear

P.S. Or you could just get her IP address and block her from your site completely. Just think of it, her whole world would crumble!

      • Oh, yeah, when I tried it in netscape it didn’t work at all but now that I am in IE, it’s going.

Hmmmmm those little floaty stars drive me mad.None of the links are working still too… zort.]

Wiggly.. she’s a little gothie like me. hope she doesn’t find my site.. except I am kinda a candygoth.

        p.s. ZURBERT!

        • I thought I was the only one who found those whirly things around my mouse arrow annoying, they were making me carsick or something *S*
          Glad I’m not alone!

Visualize whirled peas (her whirly mouse arrow things)

    • uh, her site wouldn’t load for me after the first page. did she take it down? The first page did have a similar feel, tho.

  5. copycat

well, there is ONE big difference. Your site WORKS.
But geeze…right down to the “look and feel” Holy Microsoft, Batman!

  6. Copy Cat

Flattery via immitation my ass! Steph, I have been visting you’re website for over a year and adore it.

I never saw the original website that this chick put up, but even with the supposed “changes” I still see glaring similarities to yours!

I’d say forget it. Your fans know the truth! She may duplicate some of your ideas, but your creativity and style will leave her far behind time and time again.

    Be well,

    ‘Rella

  7. stupid copy cats

that’s reeeally similar.. i never saw her page before when it was more the same i guess.. but this.. i mean, she even has some of the same sections as you.. = there are some differences.. but it’s still got a lot of similarities..

yea.. imitation and such is flattering.. but STILL.. i dunno.. i wouldn’t want someone copying my html because they loved it so much.. not that i have any html for anyone to copy.. but y’kno.. if i did.. 😉

  8. *giggles*

Don’t be upset, I looked at her birthday card and I get this feeling that none of those people who posted on it are real… I think she posted them herself. They all have the same feel to them.

    So don’t feel bad!

    -GG

  9. That site isn’t anything like yours. Your fans will stick up for you regardless of whether or not it is a copy of your site.

  10. Copying

I’d try not to let it upset you too much, though that can be hard.

I’d be really upset if she copied your code, you mentioned that your birthdays where pixel similar, that’s sacreligiouse (sp).

But I have to admit that I’ve seen items that I thought where cool and tried to create my own version. [example, I loved the curved textbox design of http://www.spacegirl.org (by the way a really well done site) and recreated my own version at http://www.shawngraham.com] I’ve notice many camgirls recreating the same themed/stylized eyes you use in livejournal.

The “art similarities” are upsetting but there’s little that can be done so I wouldn’t stress about it.

But code/artwork stealing is wrong and if that’s the case I’d like to see you take action.

Should say that all I saw on her site was the home page and birthday section.

    muttly

    • Re: Copying

besides, quality has its place, your site works and is well designed. Her’s is definitely gobeldegook and not very well thought out.

  11. hmmm…

yeah, quite a few similarities, but there’s something even bigger…

she didn’t come up with that stuff, you did. you’re original, she’s obviously not. how sad that she cannot work on improving her own artistic skills that she feels the need to rip off someone else — someone else who is much more creative like stephanie.

i agree with the people who said to block her ip number. also, i agree with those who said not to worry — the people who count most, your friends and fans, know who is the original. 🙂

  12. A Real Goth?

please don’t be sad my pretty goth sister. She’s not a real goth like us. If she were she would be herself and unique like us.

All webmasters know it take imagination and creatvity for a good site. Maybe one day she will get an idea or something…who knows.

I havent seen her at any of the clubs have you?

    • Re: A Real Goth?

i never asked you to judge me on my goth-ness. BTW the way…common sense would tell you I haven’t been to any clubs because I LIVE NO WHERE NEAR YOU!

  13. I looked, was *going* to let it slide in my mind and *then* noticed her oddities link.
When I hear the word oddities, I always recall stvlive, no one else.
She does have a stvlive banner at the very bottom of her linkage page, but all-in-all I feel that her site is a little too like Stephanie’s to let it go pass =(

  14. it does not look like yours

steph, her site does not even compare to yours. Yours is much better! I don’t think they are that similar and i do not think you have anything to worry about. Looks like maybe she copied a few elements, but imitation is the most sincere form of flattery! You are busy making your site the best, so do not worry about hers.

    • Re: it does not look like yours

yes…but I do think its a TAD different when you steal code as well. Code theft is a more serious crime because it falsely represents talents that you don’t actually have

  15. I just did a nslookup on her site and she’s hosting with addr.com. A quick check with addr.. she pays 9.95/month for that site(READ:cheap) Sounds like she is just starting to fool around on the web, and also taking some courses. How much do you want to bet she used the edit button in IE to bring the page into FrontPage? She took your pages as a template and at first didn’t know how to make any changes or even read html. But now it looks like she’s getting the hang of it, even putting in some javascript from here. Maybe she’ll even learn how to write her own scripts eventually.

Anyways, its a bummer she chose your site but she’s just a young girl who’s messing around with the web. And not doing a bad job at it either. As her skillz develop, she will pull farther and farther away from this “template”

I hope this hasn’t been a bad experience for her with all the criticism and flames that are floating on this journal.[I thought this was a happy place] And I hope that she keeps with it and blossoms into a great designer.

    • i am surprised that this has gotten so many responces! 43 so far! i certainly didn’t want anyone to flamer her – i just wanted opinions on is it really did seem like she was still copying, as i got yet another email about it…

    • Ummm….I hate Frontpage. Never used it…never will. For your info I type everything up in Notepad and load to FTP. I know how to write my own scripts. And as for courses….those are scheduled for my next semester.

  16. There’s only one Stephie.

(Psst. We like you better because you’re not a silly goth grrl.)

  17. that little theif

I don’t know that much about software and webpage design but I do know a theif when I see one, and she’s got it written all over her little ten cent site. Now I it was my site she was ripping off then I’d resort to legal action against her. But I’m glad to see that you’re trying to be a the bigger person here Steph. Good for you! Now that everyone knows about this little crook maybe she’ll vanish without a trace.

  18. copycattery

As someone else who has been accused in the past of stealing from Steph’s site, I just feel a compulsion to post in this thread 🙂 I feel bad now that I copycatted some of the artistic elements of the site, though I never stole html. And I’ve since redesigned my site, and I know its never going to be great (hey, I’m a biologist, not a computer person – I know there’s another name for that, but damn if I can think of it!!), but at least its *mine* now. I, and anyone else who steals site design, was only fooling myself. What’s the point in even putting up a site if it’s not going to be yours?
